Until recently the only type of weather station you could buy would be big bulky and very expensive so most people just watched the TV forecast or contacted the National Weather Service. This has now changed with a wide variety of weather stations now available for the general public to buy and really get the most out of their local weather.
Most people will probably think it is pointless having your own weather station but local weather conditions can change very quickly, ethier in a good way but as we all know…mainly in a bad way! For an example, if you check your local airport weather station temperature reading on the Internet this may differ by quite a bit to the temperature at your location. Sometimes this can be why its snowing in your location but not only ten miles away. This can be fascinating to monitor for any weather fan.
Please do not worry about cost, weather stations now cater for all pockets and budgets. There are a couple of things to look out for when choosing a weather station…
Wireless or wired?
Most of the older weather stations on the market are wired. This means there is usually a lead or wire you have to connect the weather station to, so it can be powered and also to send data back to your main unit of PC. I really recommend a wireless weather station. Practically all models on the market are wireless, it is much easier to set up with no ugly cables across the floor!
How much money should I spend?
All depends on what you want. If you are just starting out I would recommend spending your money on a product you will understand and be able to use. There is no point spending lots of money on a weather station you will not understand how to use because it is aimed at the more experienced meteorologist.
